Democrats mark Pia Dandiya's campaign as key House battleground for 2026

The move comes after Florida's mid-decade congressional redistricting reshaped the state's political map.

Pia Dandiya, who is seeking the democratic party’s nomination in Florida's newly remapped 22nd Congressional District, said the district has been added to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's (DCCC) list of key House battlegrounds for the 2026 elections.

Dandiya announced the development in a post on X, writing, "We are officially on the map. The DCCC just added FL-22 to its Districts in Play. The fight for the House runs through South Florida and we're going to make it happen! It's TIME - time to turn Florida back blue and we'll keep building a campaign worthy of the sunshine state."

The DCCC's "Districts in Play" program identifies congressional districts the committee considers critical to Democrats' effort to reclaim the House majority in the 2026 midterm elections. Florida's 22nd District was added to the target list following the state's mid-decade congressional remap.

Dandiya shifted her campaign to the open 22nd District in May after Gov. Ron DeSantis approved a mid-decade redistricting plan that significantly redrew congressional boundaries across South Florida. She had initially launched her campaign in the neighboring 21st District against Republican Rep. Brian Mast.

The newly configured 22nd District stretches nearly coast-to-coast, from Marco Island in southwest Florida to western portions of Palm Beach and Broward counties. The seat has no incumbent after Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz opted to seek reelection in the neighboring 20th Congressional District under the new map.

The announcement comes as Dandiya's campaign reported surpassing $2 million in total fundraising, including $515,000 raised during the second quarter—its strongest fundraising period to date. The campaign said it has more than $1.3 million in cash on hand heading into the Democratic primary. Official federal campaign finance reports covering April through June are due July 15.

A first-generation American, Dandiya is a former high school principal, White House fellow and public strategies lead at Apple.

Her campaign has received endorsements from several current and former members of Congress, Florida lawmakers and local officials, as well as organizations including EMILY's List, the Florida AFL-CIO, Indian American Impact and the AAPI Victory Fund.
