Filmmaker Deepa Mehta is coming up with her new venture titled ‘Sher’, Variety reported. A comedic take on the iconic Sherlock Holmes tales, Sher explores the story in an Indian context.
The movie is set in colonial Calcutta and centers around the character of Dr. John Watson. Watson reaches India, after Sherlock’s death, hoping to sell his books but ends up finding Sherlock’s daughter in the process, Mehta told Variety in an interview.
The movie marks a significant departure for Mehta from her conventional filmography. Known for intense dramas, Mehta walks the comedic and commercial route with this movie. Oscar nominated Mehta explores complex social issues like gender, religion, and cultural identity in India, blending powerful storytelling with emotional depth. Her work includes films like ‘Midnight's Children’ and ‘Funny Boy’, known for their bold narratives, rich visuals, and tackling of taboo subjects.

The movie, Sher, has reached pre-production stage and will likely start casting in July, with the film targeting a 2026 release.
Mehta is reportedly working on two other projects, ‘Troilokya,’ based on a true story of a prostitute in 1890s Calcutta who became a serial killer and ‘Forgiveness’, which seeks to explore cross-cultural relationships in post-WWII Canada
