California Assembly OKs SB 509; SALDEF hails civil rights win

As the bill heads to the Senate, SALDEF urged lawmakers to approve it swiftly and called on Gov. Gavin Newsom to sign it into law.

The California Assembly has passed SB 509, a bill requiring law enforcement to be trained to identify and respond to “transnational repression,” intimidation and harassment carried out by foreign governments against diaspora communities.

The Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF), which mobilized support for the measure, hailed the vote as a civil rights milestone.
