Calgary police arrest 4 on kidnapping and extortion charges

The Organized Crime & Offender Management Section of Calgary Police has arrested four Indian-American men and issued warrants for a fifth in connection with a violent kidnapping and extortion attempt that targeted a South Asian family in Edmonton, Canada, Calgary Police announced on May 15. 

24-year-old Taranveer Singh, 25-year-old Daksh Gautam, 18-year-old Akashdeep Singh and 24-year-old Pardeep Singh were arrested by the police and are currently in search of 29-year-old Gagandeep Singh. 

On May 6, 2026, four of the assailants allegedly kidnapped a man from his residence in Edmonton and subsequently drove him to Calgary after assualting him and threatening him at gunpoint.

The suspects then took the victim to one of his friend’s residence, who was allegedly the intended extortion target, and tried to force him to lure the friend outside. When the victim refused, he was assaulted again.

As the victim’s friend and his wife attempted to leave their home, the couple were followed and threatened with a firearm, prompting them to get back to their house and call the police. 

Upon recieving the complaint, officers conducted a traffic stop near Metis Trail and 104 Avenue N.E., arresting two of the suspects. The initial kidnapping was not known to the police at this and the duo were charged only on the copmlaints filed by the victim's friend and his wife. 

The two remaining suspects then drove the victim back to Edmonton and released him early the next morning. The victim then reported his own kidnapping to the police, thereby painting a full picture of the crime. 

On May 12, with assistance from the CPS Tactical Team, police arrested two more suspects during a traffic stop in the 600 block of Martindale Boulevard N.E. A privately manufactured firearm was seized during the investigation.

All four of the arrested individuals now multiple charges including kidnapping with a firearm, unlawful confinement, pointing a firearm, assault with a weapon, and assault. 

Talking about the incident, Supt. Jeff Bell of the CPS Criminal Operations & Intelligence Division said in a statement, "“This is a significant escalation in violence in the extortion incidents that we have seen in Calgary so far." 

He continued, "Since this series began, we have been working very closely with our policing partners nationally to share information and co-ordinate our response, which allowed us to quickly make arrests in this case.”
