The American Punjabi Society (APS) announced two new global honors — the Punjabi Ratan Award and the Punjabi Virasat Award — during a curtain raiser and media briefing held Nov. 10 at The Pearl in Hicksville. The event also marked the official launch of preparations for the APS Annual Gala, scheduled for Dec. 10 at Pearl Banquet Hall.

APS President Gary S. Sikka introduced the Punjabi Ratan Award, described as the organization’s highest honor, recognizing “exceptional leadership, philanthropy, and service.” He said the award, meaning “The Jewel of the Punjabi Community,” will be given annually to an individual who demonstrates leadership, generosity, and commitment to service.

“It is not merely a medal, but a symbol of gratitude from APS to those whose words, actions, and contributions inspire us all,” Sikka said.

He also announced the Punjabi Virasat, or “Heritage Award,” which will honor individuals who preserve Punjabi culture and values. “APS is not just an organization — it is a family bound by culture and service,” Sikka said. “Our future lies in unity, and by bringing Indian-American associations together under one umbrella, we create strength, voice, and impact for all.”

The event began with APS General Secretary Varinder P. S. Sikka welcoming community leaders and media representatives. He spoke about the organization’s beginnings and its founding directors, including President Gary S. Sikka, Senior Vice President Mohinder Singh Taneja, and Vice Presidents Ajayvir S. Sondhi, Paul S. Bindra, R.P.S. Narang, and Jaspal S. Arora.

Sunil Hali, publisher of The Indian Eye, reflected on Sikh values of unity and service, while APS Media Director Pradeep Tandon presented “APS – Celebrating Culture, Service & Community,” highlighting the group’s mission to unite the Punjabi community through culture and compassion.

Vice President Ajayvir S. Sondhi detailed the organization’s council structure, and Women’s Council Chair Navneet Sikka Sondhi discussed women-led initiatives. Senior Vice President Taneja noted APS’s collaboration with Nassau County Police Commissioner Pat Ryder on safety and outreach programs.

Sikka also reviewed APS’s community activities from 2023 to 2025, including Vaisakhi celebrations, cancer awareness drives, and blood donation camps. In recognition of these efforts, New York City Mayor Eric Adams presented him with the “Health Achiever of New York” award at Gracie Mansion on June 9.

The 2025 Annual Gala will feature Punjabi cinema icon Neeru Bajwa and folk singer Miss Pooja as special guests, both recognized for promoting Punjabi culture worldwide.
