Abhishek Sharma sets world record for fastest 1,000 T20I runs

Sharma’s record also places him ahead of India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav, who took 573 balls, and New Zealand’s Finn Allen, who took 611.

Indian batter Abhishek Sharma set a new world record in T20 international cricket by becoming the fastest player to score 1,000 runs in terms of balls faced for a single country.

The milestone came during the fifth T20I against Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane on Saturday, where Sharma reached the four-digit mark in 528 balls.

The record, previously held by Australia’s Tim David, stood at 569 balls. David had reached the mark during his innings of 74 off 38 balls against India in Hobart on Nov. 2. With this, Sharma not only broke David’s record but also became the fastest Indian to achieve the feat in terms of matches played.

Sharma reached 1,000 runs in 28 innings, one inning more than Virat Kohli, who had done so in 27 innings from 29 matches. The list of Indians with the fewest innings to reach 1,000 T20I runs now reads: Kohli (27), Sharma (28), KL Rahul (29), Suryakumar Yadav (31), and Rohit Sharma (40).

In global terms, the fewest matches record remains jointly held by England’s Dawid Malan and the Czech Republic’s Sabawoon Davizi, both reaching the landmark in their 24th match.

Sharma’s record also places him ahead of India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav, who took 573 balls, and New Zealand’s Finn Allen, who took 611. While David now stands sixth on the all-time list with 614 balls to reach 1,000 runs across appearances for Singapore and Australia, Sharma’s record applies solely to his performances for India.

During the Gabba innings, Sharma had moments of fortune, being dropped twice—once before and once after reaching the milestone—in the first 11 balls he faced.

Meanwhile, Indian batters Sanju Samson (995 runs) and Tilak Varma (991 runs) remain just short of the 1,000-run milestone but were not included in India’s playing XI for the final match of the series.
