Drexel University appoints Sandhya Kortagere as medical college vice dean

She currently co-leads the college’s Strategic Plan 2030 implementation group on research and innovation.

Drexel University College of Medicine has appointed Indian-American neuropharmacologist Sandhya Kortagere as vice dean of research and innovation. 

A tenured professor of microbiology and immunology,  Kortagere will oversee key components of the research infrastructure, including grants administration, compliance, and research facilities in her new role.

She will also play a critical role in advancing commercialization, technology transfer, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration between the College’s research, clinical, and educational strengths, the university said in a statement. 

Kortagere co-founded PolyCore Therapeutics and led the development of the first known G-protein biased agonist of the dopamine D3 receptor, offering new hope for Parkinson’s disease treatment. Her lab has also contributed to the development of novel antimalarials for severe malaria.

Kortagere’s research has attracted over $6 million in federal and non-federal funding. She has authored more than 80 publications in leading journals such as Nature Communications and Science and is also a named inventor on 14 patents. 

In addition to her research leadership, Kortagere has mentored numerous graduate and postdoctoral fellows and held various academic administrative positions. She currently co-leads the College’s Forward and Strategic Plan 2030 implementation planning group on research and innovation.

She holds a PhD in molecular pharmacology from the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, India.
