Diaspora pays global tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on anniversary

Indian missions across the globe commemorated the 156th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi with floral tributes, cultural programs, and community gatherings, reaffirming the enduring relevance of the Father of the Nation’s message of truth, peace, and non-violence.

United States

In Washington, D.C., Ambassador Vinay Kwatra, along with embassy officials, paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his 156th birth anniversary. The Embassy also hosted a commemorative event on Sept. 30, which brought together members of the Indian diaspora, students, professionals, and friends of India.



Srimati Karuna, director of the Gandhi Memorial Center in Bethesda, Maryland, delivered a talk on “Gandhi’s Life and Message,” sharing anecdotes about Gandhi’s inspirations and his vision for the world. The program also featured renditions of bhajans and songs beloved by Gandhi, performed by differently abled young Indian artists Anusha Manjunath and Vasundhara Raturi.

Deputy Head of Mission Chinmoy Naik, in his remarks during the commemorations, said Gandhi’s teachings “continue to inspire millions and his message of truth and non-violence resonates ever more strongly in today’s world.” An exhibition of historic moments from Gandhi’s life was also presented.

United Kingdom

At Tavistock Square in London, the High Commission of India, in collaboration with Camden Council, commemorated the occasion with a gathering of community leaders and dignitaries. Camden Mayor Eddie Hanson, India League President Alpesh B. Patel, and former MP Virendra Sharma joined in paying tributes. The High Commission noted that the event reflected the continuing resonance of Gandhi’s vision of peace and unity.



Russia

In Moscow, minister of state for textiles and external affairs Pabitra Margherita paid floral tributes to Gandhi at his statue in Ramenki Rayon Park. The event was attended by local authorities and representatives of the Indian community, underscoring the deep respect for Gandhi’s legacy across borders.



Singapore

The High Commission of India in Singapore combined the celebration with a service initiative, presenting books on diverse topics to the One World International School library to establish an “India Corner.” The mission highlighted the effort as part of its commitment to sharing Indian knowledge and values with younger generations.



United Arab Emirates (Dubai)

The Consulate General of India in Dubai observed Gandhi Jayanti with a focus on service. The consulate organized medical check-ups for its sanitation staff, described as the “Swachhata heroes” whose efforts keep the chancery clean and functional, linking Gandhi’s legacy to ongoing community care initiatives.



Hong Kong

The Consulate General of India in Hong Kong marked Gandhi Jayanti with a cultural reflection on India’s linguistic diversity. Members of Indian community associations presented letters in 12 scheduled Indian languages, along with Magahi and Marwari, linking Gandhi’s principles with the vision of a developed India. The mission described the initiative as a moving testament to “unity in diversity.”



Austria

In Vienna, the Indian Embassy hosted a “Friedenskonzert” — a concert for peace — blending Indian and Western music to honor Gandhi’s ideals. The performance featured violinist Manoj George, sitarist Alokesh Chandra, soprano Barbara Kajetanowicz, and François-Pierre Descamps with the Chamber Orchestra Mödling. Diplomats, diaspora members, and music enthusiasts attended the event, which highlighted Gandhi’s timeless message of harmony.
