India on Sept. 2 appointed senior diplomat Deepak Mittal as India’s next Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
A 1998-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service, Mittal currently serves as Additional Secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said he is expected to assume his post shortly.

Mittal brings extensive diplomatic experience to the post, having previously served as India’s Ambassador to Qatar. He played a pivotal part in facilitating India’s first formal engagement with the Taliban in August 2021, following the U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan.
His appointment comes at a significant moment in India-UAE relations, which have strengthened considerably since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s landmark visit to the Gulf nation in 2015, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 34 years.
The two countries are bound by robust economic and strategic ties, underscored by the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). On Sept. 1, New Delhi and Abu Dhabi reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral trade, setting a target of $100 billion in non-oil, non-precious metals trade by 2030.
India maintains a consular network in the UAE comprising the Embassy of India in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate General of India in Dubai. The Indian population in the UAE is estimated at around 4 million as of 2024–2025, making it the largest expatriate community and accounting for roughly 35 percent of the UAE's total population.
Mittal’s appointment signals India’s intent to deepen its strategic and economic partnership with the UAE amid shifting global trade dynamics.
