Dattani’s ‘Dance Like a Man’ comes to Cincinnati

Rangmanch Cincy, an Ohio-based nonprofit organization, is bringing performances of Mahesh Dattani’s award-winning classic drama, ‘Dance Like a Man,’ to Cincinnati on March 6 and 7.
Dattani’s two-act play, ‘Dance Like a Man,’ was first performed in 1989. It explores gender roles, patriarchy, family dynamics, ambition, sacrifice and societal expectations around masculinity — particularly through the lens of Bharatanatyam.

The plot revolves around Jairaj, a male Bharatanatyam dancer whose passion is crushed by his patriarchal father’s belief that “men don’t dance,” leading to lifelong bitterness and family conflict. Through flashbacks and sharp dialogue, it explores gender stereotypes, sacrifice, marital tensions and the cost of defying societal norms around masculinity and art in a traditional Indian family.
The Cincinnati performance will be directed by Srinivas Mirle and performed by local artists.
With original music and choreography, shows will commence at the Anderson Center Theatre at 7 p.m. on March 6 and at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. on March 7. Ticket bookings are now open.
