Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni to discuss writing in California virtual event

California-based Mountain View Library is organizing a virtual conversation with Indian-American author and poet Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni on May 7 at 9:30 p.m. EST.
Houston resident Divakaruni is an award-winning author, activist and professor and has authored 21 books, including 'The Mistress of Spices', 'Sister of My Heart' and 'Before We Visit the Goddess'.
The free-to-register event will feature the author discussing her writing career and creative process. The virtual chat will also include a question-and-answer session, allowing attendees to clear doubts and gain a fresh perspective on Divakaruni’s work and life.
Her newest novel, 'Independence', published in 2022, depicts the experiences of three sisters in strife-torn Calcutta as India frees itself from British rule. She received the 2024 American Book Award for her work.

Divakaruni is also an activist in education and domestic violence prevention and serves as the McDavid Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Houston’s internationally acclaimed Creative Writing Program.
She has been closely associated with several nonprofits, including Pratham, which educates underprivileged children in India; Akshaya Patra, which feeds schoolchildren; and Daya and Maitri, which support survivors of domestic violence. She also supports the Houston Food Bank.
Her work has been published in more than 100 magazines and anthologies, including The Atlantic, The New Yorker, The Best American Short Stories and O. Henry Prize Stories. Her writings have been translated into 30 languages, including Dutch, Hebrew, Bengali, Hungarian, Turkish, Hindi and Japanese.
Her books have been adapted into films, plays, dance dramas and operas. She has received several prestigious awards, including the American Book Award, the PEN Josephine Miles Award, the Premio Scanno and the Light of India Award. In 2015, The Economic Times named her one of the 20 Most Influential Global Indian Women.
