The invitation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Alberta from June 15 to 17 has evoked mixed reactions not only from the Indo-Canadian community but also from various political outfits in the host country.
The Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney, issued a statement outlining the priorities of his government ahead of the G7 Leaders’ Summit. It is the seventh time that Canada has held the Presidency of the G7 summit. During one of its previous presidencies, Dr Manmohan Singh, the then Prime Minister of India, was invited as a special guest in Toronto.
In the face of rapid changes in global politics and upheaval, a small group of advanced economies formed what is now the G7 – a forum for cooperation, stability, and shared prosperity. In 2025, as global challenges intensify, the G7 must meet this moment with purpose and with force.
The challenges have intensified after US President Donald Trump, in his second term in the White House, unleashed an unprecedented tariff war that has put growing economies into a challenging mode. Canada is one of the economies that Donald Trump’s actions and threats have significantly impacted.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the priorities that will guide his country’s 2025 G7 Leaders’ Summit, to be held in Kananaskis, Alberta, from June 15 to 17, 2025.
“Canada has what the world wants and the values to which others aspire. The G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis is an opportunity for Canada to collaborate with trusted partners to address challenges with unity, purpose, and resolve. Canada is ready to lead,” says Mark Carney.

Anchored in building stronger economies, Canada will seek agreements and coordinated action on three core missions - Protecting our communities and the world – strengthening peace and security, countering foreign interference and transnational crime, and improving joint responses to wildfires; Building energy security and accelerating the digital transition – fortifying critical mineral supply chains and using artificial intelligence and quantum to unleash economic growth; and Securing the partnerships of the future – catalyzing enormous private investment to build stronger infrastructure, create higher-paying jobs, and open dynamic markets where businesses can compete and succeed.
According to an official communiqué of the Canadian government, other discussions will include a just and lasting peace for Ukraine and other areas of conflict around the world, as well as a forward-looking agenda that engages partners beyond the G7, recognizing that our long-term security and prosperity will depend on building coalitions with reliable partners and shared values.
While leaders will begin to descend on Canada for the summit, the focus will be on the participation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. An invitation was extended to him only last week after he had a telephone conversation with his Canadian counterpart, Mark Carney.
The invitation from Mark Carney was instantly accepted by Narendra Modi, thus moving a step forward in restoring normalcy in bilateral relations. The development, however, met with some opposition not only from within the ruling Liberal party but also from other political organizations and social groups, including specific Sikh organizations, who had been critical of the BJP-led NDA government for its alleged policies against the minorities in general and Sikhs in particular.
Mark Carney, however, justified his action by inviting Narendra Modi to a Presser, saying that India was now more willing to cooperate with the ongoing Canadian investigations (concerning the Hardip Singh Nijjar case).
“We have now agreed to continued law enforcement dialogue. So there’s been some progress on that,” Carney said at a media conference, saying, “I extended the invitation to Prime Minister Modi in that context, and he has accepted.”
