Rep. Grace Meng (NY-06), Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), has flayed the alleged death threat against Indian-origin Rep. Pramila Jayapal by an elected official from Arizona.
She said in a statement: “CAPAC unequivocally condemns the death threat made against Rep. Pramila Jayapal by an elected official in Arizona, who called on the Congresswoman to be ‘tried, convicted and hanged.’ This is dangerous and completely unacceptable. At a time when political violence is surging across the country, our nation’s leaders must categorically reject violence in all its forms.”
The controversy erupted after Republican Arizona Representative John Gillette posted on X about Democratic U.S. Representative Jayapal on Wednesday: “Until people like this, that advocate for the overthrow of the American government are tried convicted and hanged … it will continue.” He did not clarify what “it” meant.
Gillette’s threat came in response to a social media post which shared a suspected contextless portion of a video showing Jayapal speaking about peaceful protests against the MAGA agenda.
