The California Federation of Teachers (CFT) endorsed congressional candidate Jasmeet Bains, adding organized labor support to her campaign in the state’s 22nd Congressional District.
In a social media post, Bains said, “Honored to earn the endorsement of the CFT - A Union of Educators and Classified Professionals, representing 120,000 educators and school staff across California. Momentum is growing as we stand up for strong public schools, support our educators, and invest in the next generation.”

CFT President Jeffery Freitas said in a statement, “Dr. Jasmeet Bains understands that strong public schools are the foundation of strong communities, and she has consistently fought to invest in students, educators, classified professionals, and the services they need. From expanding access to health care to standing up for working families, she shares our commitment to ensuring every student, no matter where they live, has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.”
Bains, a physician and California State Assembly member, is running in a closely watched Central Valley race to unseat Republican Rep. David Valadao. The district remains a battleground seat where Democrats hold a voter registration advantage, though Valadao has repeatedly won re-election.
The endorsement adds to a series of early backings for Bains, including support from EMILY’s List and multiple labor groups such as SEIU and AFSCME, signaling institutional support from both national and state-level organizations.
Bains’ campaign has also reported early fundraising gains. She raised more than $175,000 within days of launching her bid in July 2025 and later posted over $350,000 in an early fundraising quarter, describing it as a record start for a challenger in the district.
In addition to endorsements, Bains has featured in campaign messaging centered on healthcare and public services. She previously appeared in a political advertisement calling for opposition to cuts to Medi-Cal, aligning her campaign with healthcare access issues in the district.
The contest is part of the 2026 U.S. House elections cycle, with California’s primary scheduled for June 2, followed by the general election on Nov. 3.
