Avatans Kumar, a senior journalist based in Chicago, was honored by the California News Publishers Association (CNPA) during a gala held at the Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City Hotel earlier this month.
He received an honorable mention for his thought-provoking India Currents opinion piece, Kamala Chitti's Uphill Battle Courting Indian American Voters, under the category of "Indian American Voices."
Kumar is a prolific columnist, contributing to several prominent publications, including Newsweek, The Times of India, India Currents, The Sunday Guardian, Organiser, The Print, and New India Abroad. The recent recognition adds to his list of accolades, including the San Francisco Press Club's Journalism Awards.

Kumar's frequent media appearances include Door Darshan and News18 India. His writings and oral presentations are majorly focused on Indian history, culture, Hinduism, and the experiences of the Indian diaspora, offering a unique non-Western perspective.
He has curated an anthology of short stories, The Flight of Deities: An Anthology of Desecration and Devotion and has contributed chapters in Westland Books' Indian Renaissance: The Modi Decade and BlueOne Ink's Padma Bharatis: Ordinary Indians Extraordinary Triumphs. Kumar has also been involved in translating original English work into Hindi. Notable works include Prof. Subhash Kak and Ambassador Arun Sahu’s poetry collections प्रकाश और छाया का पथ and इग्वाना और अन्य कविताएँ respectively.
A native of Patna, Bihar, Kumar holds graduate degrees in linguistics from Jawaharlal Nehru University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
