Bollywood choreographer Farah Khan to join Oscar voting body

The filmmaker-choreographer is among several Indian film professionals invited to the Academy's 2026 membership.

Filmmaker and choreographer Farah Khan has been invited to join the 2026 membership of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Sharing the news on Instagram, Khan expressed her excitement over the recognition, writing, "Thrilled & proud to be a part of this esteemed group."

Members who accept the invitation will join a global community of more than 11,000 film professionals with voting rights for future Oscars.

 



The Academy this year invited 529 artists, filmmakers and industry executives from around the world to join its membership, recognizing their contributions to cinema while expanding the organization's international representation. 

Khan is among several film personalities from India to receive invitations this year. Filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj, known for Maqbool, Omkara and Haider, also made the list.

The Academy also invited veteran editors A. Sreekar Prasad and Deepa Bhatia, costume designer Eka Lakhani, casting director Dilip Shankar and documentary filmmaker Shalini Kantayya.

Other professionals with strong ties to the Indian film industry who received invitations include Avneet Kaur in the Animation branch, Rajesh Ramachandran in the Production and Technology branch, and Becky Graham and Jay Mehta in the Visual Effects branch.

Academy membership is considered one of the film industry's highest honors. Members who accept the invitation receive voting rights within their respective branches and help determine future Oscar nominees and winners.

Khan's most recent directorial venture was Happy New Year, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone.
