Bhanu Sadasivan appointed Santa Clara County judge

Sadasivan brings more than two decades of experience in patent litigation and life sciences.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom appointed Indian American veteran patent attorney Bhanu Sadasivan to the Santa Clara County Superior Court on June 26.

Sadasivan is among 14 Superior Court judges appointed by Newsom across California. She will fill the vacancy on the Santa Clara County Superior Court created by the retirement of Judge Joanne McCracken.

Sadasivan has been a partner at McDermott Will & Emery since 2012, where she has focused on patent litigation, particularly in the life sciences sector. Her practice has included disputes involving recombinant DNA technology, pharmaceutical formulations, computer hardware and software, and other intellectual property matters.

Before joining McDermott, she worked as an associate at Covington & Burling from 2008 to 2012 and at Heller Ehrman from 2004 to 2008.

Prior to her legal career, Sadasivan was a postdoctoral research fellow at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, where she was awarded the Arthritis Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship. She is also the co-author of several scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Her legal work has earned national recognition, including being named among Lawdragon's Top 500 Leading Litigators in America from 2022 through 2026. She has also been recognized in Best Lawyers in America for patent and intellectual property litigation and listed in the IAM Patent 1000 guide of leading patent practitioners.

In addition to her legal practice, Sadasivan has been active in the community through the Asian Law Alliance, where she has served as a board member and previously as board president.

According to the Governor's Office, Sadasivan is registered as an Independent.

Sadasivan earned a Juris Doctor from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law. She holds a Ph.D. in Immunology from Yale University and a Master of Science in Immunology with honors and a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology with honors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
