The Indian National Science Academy, established in 1935, is the country’s premier scientific body dedicated to advancing scientific research and using knowledge for the benefit of society and national welfare.
“This well-deserved recognition from the Indian National Science Academy both honors Bernard’s accomplishments in his field and also highlights his leadership as Tufts’ chief research officer,” Caroline Genco, provost and senior vice president at Tufts, said in a statement.
“This distinction positions him to further expand research and educational exchange programs, strengthen collaborations, and engage with the academy and other international organizations. These efforts will connect public, academic, and policy audiences so that the positive impact of Tufts researchers may be seen worldwide,” he added.
An immunologist by training, Arulanandam’s research focuses on the cellular and molecular mechanisms that drive immune responses to infectious diseases. He has authored more than 150 scientific publications and holds multiple patents related to vaccine development.
His work has advanced understanding of host-microbial interactions and supported the development of new vaccine strategies, including research on pathogens such as Chlamydia trachomatis, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Francisella tularensis.
He has also trained and mentored undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows who have gone on to careers in academia, government, and industry.
As vice provost for research, Arulanandam serves as Tufts’ chief research officer, overseeing technology commercialization, core research facilities, research compliance, sponsored projects, and postdoctoral affairs.
Before joining Tufts, Arulanandam served as vice president for research, economic development, and knowledge enterprise at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he also held the Jane and Roland Blumberg Professorship in Biology.
At UTSA, he led efforts to expand the university’s research enterprise through partnerships with federal agencies including the Department of Defense and the Department of Energy, and played a central role in the creation of the National Security Collaboration Center and the Cybersecurity Manufacturing Innovation Institute.
Arulanandam is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Academy of Microbiology, a recipient of the Fulbright International Education Administrator Award, and was inducted into the National Academy of Inventors in 2019.
He earned his doctorate in microbiology and immunology from the Medical College of Ohio, completed postdoctoral training at Albany Medical College in New York, and holds an executive master’s in business administration from the University of Texas at San Antonio.
