Tufts University has partnered with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, to establish the Interdisciplinary Centre for Nutrition Science and Medicine (ICNSM). The formal agreement was signed by Tufts president Sunil Kumar and IISc director Govindan Rangarajan on June 23.
Housed at IISc, the centre aims to advance research at the intersection of nutrition, medicine, and technology. The collaboration leverages the strengths of Tufts' Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy and IISc’s expertise in basic sciences and engineering, a release said.

The centre will facilitate joint research in areas such as nutritional immunity, cancer, aging, infectious diseases, gut microbiome, ultra-processed foods, and technology-driven healthcare solutions. Future plans include a joint PhD program, large-scale nutritional intervention studies, and tele-nutrition systems to support primary care.
Christina Economos, dean of the Friedman School, emphasized the need to embed nutrition in healthcare education and delivery,“We envision a multifaceted and flexible approach to training that equips all emerging physician-scientists and health researchers with a strong foundation in nutrition science.”
“This will offer a unique platform for researchers from IISc and Tufts to co-develop nutrition focused healthcare solutions for India, the U.S., and the rest of the world, by addressing the entire disease spectrum arising out of malnutrition as well as obesity,” said Navakanta Bhat, dean of the IISc’s Division of Interdisciplinary Sciences .
