Gathering at Fremont Hindu Temple / Special Arrangement
Members of the Indian diaspora in the San Francisco Bay Area gathered at the Fremont Hindu Temple following the West Bengal election results, in which the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) achieved a landslide victory earlier this month.
The BJP won 207 of the 294 assembly seats and a vote share of 46 per cent, reducing the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) to 80 seats and 41 per cent vote share. It was a near reversal of the 2021 election where the BJP won 77 seats and the TMC 215.
The Fremont gathering included community members and Hindu organizations who said the event was intended as a cultural and community celebration rather than a political rally.
Participants compared the atmosphere to Deepavali celebrations associated with the return of Lord Ram to Ayodhya, framing the election outcome in symbolic and religious terms.
Romesh Japra, founder of the Fremont Hindu Temple, said the results underscored the importance of unity within the Hindu community both in India and abroad.
“West Bengal till now was being ruled by people who were Indians in name only,” Japra said. “So that’s why it’s very important for all of us to be united. Similarly in USA, we should keep supporting our Dharma, our temples.”
Japra also encouraged greater civic engagement among Hindu Americans and referenced American4Hindus, urging members of the community to stay connected to local political processes.
Community member Chandru Bhambra said the gathering reflected broader concerns about representation and cultural identity among Hindu Americans.
“Uniting all Sanatanis in USA here is critical for us to gain a voice in policy making and protect our values,” Bhambra said.
