The APSA committee unanimously selected Prakash, the Walker Family professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Washington, Seattle, for his pioneering research in governance, particularly his influential contributions to environmental policy.

His body of work, which includes eight books and more than 130 peer-reviewed articles with over 18,000 citations, has reshaped understanding of how both state and non-state actors address pressing global challenges.

Prakash’s research has been especially impactful in analyzing how private actors such as businesses and non-governmental organizations can step in to address governance shortfalls where state capacity is limited.

His research has illuminated the potential and risks of these nontraditional governance mechanisms, including issues of accountability and regulatory capture. More recently, his work has expanded to climate change, exploring both mitigation and adaptation strategies, and examining the roles of governments, corporations, and NGOs in shaping global responses.

In addition to his academic contributions, Prakash has held key leadership roles, including founding the University of Washington’s Center for Environmental Politics, serving as general editor of Cambridge University Press’s Business and Public Policy series, and contributing to editorial boards of leading journals.

Prakash holds a B.A. from St. Stephen's College, University of Delhi and MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, and a Joint Ph.D. from the Department of Political Science and the School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA), Indiana University, Bloomington.
