America's 250th anniversary celebrated at Global Seva Fund gala

Global Seva Fund (GSF) marked its 11th anniversary with a gala celebrating America's 250th birthday on June 28 at the Hyatt Regency Dulles in Herndon, Virginia, bringing together community leaders, elected officials, faith leaders, business leaders, philanthropists, sponsors, volunteers and supporters.

The event recognized GSF's 11 years of work in community service, education, philanthropy and humanitarian outreach while also commemorating the United States' 250-year history. Organizers said the program reflected the organization's mission of bringing communities together through service.

The event's chief guests were Anupama Sharma and Anil Sharma, chief executive officer of 22nd Century Technologies, which served as the event's diamond sponsor. Representatives from Rajdhani Mandir, Sant Nirankari Mission, BAPS, NCAIA, GOPIO, Karuna Charity, the South Asian Business Council of Virginia, interfaith organizations and other community groups also attended.

The program included a cake-cutting ceremony marking America's 250th anniversary, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and the national anthems of the United States and India.

During the event, GSF received several recognitions, including a Governor's Citation from the office of Maryland Gov. Wes Moore. The organization also received congratulatory letters from Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger, Rep. Suhas Subramanyam and India's Ambassador to the United States Vinay Kwatra.

One of the featured segments of the gala was the presentation of the Global Seva Fund Excellence Awards, recognizing individuals for contributions in philanthropy, entrepreneurship and community service.

The GSF Excellence in Philanthropy & Entrepreneurship Award was presented to Darshana and Dr. Arun Varshneya. The GSF Excellence in Philanthropy Award went to Anu and Manish Saraf, while the GSF Excellence in Community Service & Entrepreneurship Award was presented to Anjali and Mayank Gupta.

The South Asian Business Council of Virginia also presented GSF founders Dr. Shashi Chopra and Ravi Chopra with its Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing their more than five decades of community service and humanitarian leadership.

The gala also highlighted the organization's current projects and future initiatives. Cultural performances were presented by AT Dance Factory, Jhanak Dance Academy, Kuchipudi dancers led by Guru Malika Ramaprasad and Bhangra Steps Academy.

The organization said it will continue its work in education, philanthropy, community outreach, women's empowerment and humanitarian initiatives as it enters its 12th year.
