Indian American academic Ajay Vinzé has been appointed interim provost at George Mason University.

The move comes after the announcement that provost Jim Antony will depart on Mar. 1, 2026, to become provost at the University of San Diego. Vinzé will work alongside Antony through Feb. 2026 to ensure a coordinated transition across academic operations, the university said.

President Gregory Washington said Vinzé brings a strong academic record and administrative experience to the role. “Ajay, a distinguished scholar, is a respected voice among our deans,” Washington said. “I look forward to working closely with him during his time as interim provost.”

Vinzé, who currently serves as dean of the Costello College of Business, said, “While my heart remains firmly with the Costello College of Business—and I fully intend to return once a permanent provost is named—this interim role offers an important opportunity to support the broader university community that has championed our college’s growth and success over the past three years.”

Vinzé has overseen the Costello College of Business since 2022, a period marked by its transformation into a named college and the rollout of interdisciplinary and modular degree pathways geared toward workforce readiness.

Under his leadership, the college has developed programs such as Costello on Wall Street, Patriot Pitch, and Camp Costello for first-year students, while advancing research and curricular collaborations across campus.

Before joining George Mason, Vinzé served as dean of the Trulaske College of Business at the University of Missouri from 2017 to 2022. Prior to that appointment, he spent nearly two decades at Arizona State University, beginning in 1998 as an associate professor of Information Systems and later rising to full professor. At ASU, he directed the Center for the Management of Information and served as interim chair of the Department of Information Systems.

His academic career began at Texas A&M University, where he served as an assistant professor of Information and Operations Management from 1988 to 1993 before becoming an associate professor, a position he held until 1998.

Vinzé’s research expertise spans technology innovation, data analytics, and emergency preparedness. He has published more than 100 papers and held editorial roles with several major MIS journals.

He earned a B.Com (Honors) in accounting from Shri Ram College of Commerce at the University of Delhi, an MBA in finance from the University of Connecticut in 1982, and a PhD in management information systems from the University of Arizona in 1988.
