The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) appointed Indian American physician Adhir Shroff as the interim chief of the Division of Cardiology.

Shroff, a professor of clinical medicine and a physician of Gujarati descent, assumes the role as Dawood Darbar moves to Penn State College of Medicine and Penn State Health as chair of medicine, effective March 2026.

At UIC and UI Health, Shroff has held several senior leadership roles in cardiovascular care, including chief of clinical service for the Division of Cardiology and chief of Interventional Cardiology.

He also previously served as director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories at UI Health for 15 years and continues to lead the interventional cardiology fellowship program.

A specialist in interventional cardiology, Shroff is widely recognized for his work in radial-artery catheterization, a less invasive approach used in cardiac procedures.

UI Health said he helped pioneer the method and has trained hundreds of physicians in its use, while also contributing to the expansion of minimally invasive heart procedures.

He is also a core member of UI Health’s Structural Heart Disease Program, where he has worked on expanding referral networks, strengthening community outreach and broadening the range of cardiac procedures offered through the health system.

Beyond his clinical work, Shroff has remained active in physician training, research and national cardiovascular leadership. He has delivered invited presentations at major scientific meetings and has held leadership roles with the American College of Cardiology and the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions.

Shroff has also received multiple teaching and service honors during his time at UIC, including several Attending Physician of the Year awards and other faculty recognition for medical education.

He joined the UIC faculty in 2004. He earned his medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, completed his internal medicine residency and served as chief resident at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor; he also completed fellowships in cardiology and interventional cardiology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School.

He also holds a Master of Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health.
