In a shocking report published by India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), it has been reported that 175 Indians are languishing in the American prison system with one Indian awaiting the death penalty.
The statistics include individuals serving time and those awaiting trial in America.

The report further reveals that a staggering 10,574 Indians are in prisons outside India, with almost half of them being in prisons in the Middle Eastern countries of UAE(2,773) and Saudi Arabia (2,379).
The only Indian awaiting the death penalty in the USA is Raghunandan Yandamuri, on death row in Pennsylvania, USA.
Yandamuri has been convicted for the murder of a woman and her granddaughter and was sentenced to death in 2014 for the 2012 murders, which were part of a botched ransom plot.
While an execution date was set for 2018, a moratorium on the death penalty in Pennsylvania has prevented it from taking place.
UAE and Saudi Arabia also have the maximum number of Indians awaiting death penalty at present with 21 in UAE and 7 in Saudi Arabia. A total of 43 Indians are currently awaiting the death penalty.
However, the MEA report also notes that due to strong privacy laws prevailing in many countries, the local authorities do not share information on prisoners unless the person concerned consents to the disclosure of such information.
