Indian American Congressman Ami Bera (CA-06) joined members of the Democratic Doctors Caucus to denounce Republican-led efforts to drastically cut Medicaid funding.
In a press conference alongside members of the Democratic Doctors Caucus, Bera criticized the Republican budget framework, passed earlier this year, which directs the House Energy and Commerce Committee to slash $880 billion—an amount Democrats argue is unattainable without gutting Medicaid.

Medicaid is more than a health care program—it’s a lifeline for working families, seniors and children across this country.

“I’m proud to stand with my fellow Democratic Doctors in the fight to save Medicaid,” said Bera, an internal medicine physician. “Republicans need to understand that Medicaid is more than a health care program—it’s a lifeline for working families, seniors and children across this country. We’re going to fight tooth and nail to protect this care—not gut it just to hand out tax breaks to Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos.”
A recent analysis by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that Republican proposals could result in 2.3 to 8.6 million Americans losing health coverage, depending on the specific measures implemented. The report indicates that states would be forced to reduce enrollment, scale back benefits, or cut provider payments in response to deep federal funding cuts—jeopardizing access to care for vulnerable populations nationwide.
In a related move, Bera announced his support for a discharge petition led by Rep. Brendan Boyle (PA-02) to protect both Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) from budgetary cuts. If the petition receives 218 signatures, it would force a floor vote on the Hands Off Medicaid and SNAP Act, which would prohibit cuts to the programs during budget reconciliation.
“As a doctor, I know that access to health care and nutrition isn’t a luxury—it’s a basic need,” Bera said. “SNAP and Medicaid are vital programs that millions of Americans rely on to stay healthy and feed their families. I’m proud to stand up and protect these vital programs from harmful cuts.”
