New York Governor Kathy Hochul on Sept. 14 endorsed Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor, in her first public intervention in the race after months of speculation.

Hochul, a Democrat serving as the state’s 57th governor, announced her support in a New York Times opinion piece. “In the past few months, I’ve had frank conversations with him. We’ve had our disagreements. But in our conversations, I heard a leader who shares my commitment to a New York where children can grow up safe in their neighborhoods and where opportunity is within reach for every family,” she wrote.

The governor said she expected Mamdani to prioritize public safety and ensure strong leadership at the New York Police Department. “Zohran Mamdani and I will both be fearless in confronting the president’s extreme agenda — with urgency, conviction, and the defiance that defines New York,” she added.

Mamdani, a state assemblymember from Queens, welcomed the endorsement on X, writing, “ I’m grateful for the Governor's support in unifying our party, her resolve in standing up to Trump, and her focus on making New York affordable. I look forward to the great work we will accomplish together. Our movement is only growing stronger.”

Hochul’s backing could prove significant, as several of Mamdani’s policy proposals—such as rent freezes and new taxes on the wealthy—would require cooperation from the governor and state legislature. The endorsement also follows weeks of speculation, as Hochul had previously praised Mamdani after his primary victory in June but stopped short of formally backing him, citing differences over policing.

Mamdani has faced criticism for a 2020 social media post in which he called the NYPD racist, a comment he recently said he would apologize for. Hochul had publicly encouraged him to take that step, underscoring her insistence on strong leadership and resources for the police. Her endorsement suggests she believes he has adjusted his stance on those issues, even as they continue to disagree on some policy matters.

The race is shaping into a three-way contest between Mamdani, incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, and former Governor Andrew Cuomo, both of whom are running as independents. Polls have shown Mamdani leading his rivals in recent weeks. Several prominent Democrats, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have yet to endorse in the race.
