Zohran Mamdani, a mayoral candidate and assembly member from New York, has established a significant advantage in the New York City mayoral race, according to a recent poll.

The New York Times/Siena College survey, found Mamdani at 46 percent, well ahead of former Governor Andrew Cuomo at 24 percent, Republican Curtis Sliwa at 15 percent and incumbent Mayor Eric Adams at 9 percent.

“Mamdani holds a huge lead among younger voters while voters forty-five and older are split between Cuomo and Mamdani in the four-way race,” said Don Levy, director of the Siena Research Institute.

The poll showed Mamdani with a 52 percent favorable rating among likely voters, while a majority, 59 percent, view Cuomo unfavorably. A plurality of Mamdani’s supporters identified the cost of living as the city’s top concern, whereas voters who preferred Cuomo, Adams and Sliwa cited crime as the most pressing issue.

Levy noted that the dynamics of the race could shift if the field narrows. “The big ‘if’ is what would happen if both Sliwa and Adams were to drop out of the race and make it a two-person showdown,” he said. “Cuomo would capture the vast majority of both Adams’ and Sliwa’s current support and win a majority of voters over forty-five. Mamdani’s overwhelming 22-point lead would shrink to four points. At present, Cuomo would need both Adams and Sliwa to drop out in order to close the gap.”

The two-way race scenario has fueled speculation about consolidation within the field. Independent candidate Jim Walden suspended his campaign earlier this week and called on rivals to unite against Mamdani, though neither Cuomo nor Adams has indicated a willingness to step aside.

Mamdani’s presence in the race has also begun to influence broader political dynamics. Real estate interests, initially cautious about his democratic socialist agenda, have started engaging with his team on issues such as property-tax restructuring and affordable housing policy. At the same time, he has drawn support from progressive figures nationally, including Senator Bernie Sanders, who appeared with him at a Brooklyn rally.

The poll was conducted from September 2 to 6 among 1,284 likely voters with a margin of error of 3.6 percent.
