Indian airports across the north-west, especially in states bordering Pakistan have been shut until further orders in the wake of Operation Sindoor, India’s retaliatory strike on terrorist camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
Authorities closed down the Srinagar airport in Jammu and Kashmir for the day and until further notice.
Hundreds of flights have been cancelled and flight operations have been impacted in Srinagar, Leh, Dharamshala, Jammu, Amritsar, Jodhpur, Bikaner airporters in the border states. All departures and arrivals have been affected.
They advised the passengers to check their flight status and plan travel accordingly.
National carrier Air India has announced the cancellation of all flights to and from nine cities — Jammu, Srinagar, Leh, Jodhpur, Amritsar, Bhuj, Jamnagar, Chandigarh, and Rajkot — until 12 noon today, pending further updates from authorities.
Two international flights en route to Amritsar have also been diverted to Delhi.
Moreover, no civil flights will be operated from Srinagar Airport today as the airfield is closed, officials said.
Air India said in an advisory: “In view of the prevailing situation, Air India has cancelled all its flights to and from the following stations – Jammu, Srinagar, Leh, Jodhpur, Amritsar, Bhuj, Jamnagar, Chandigarh and Rajkot – till 12 noon on 7 May, pending further updates from authorities. Two international flights en route to Amritsar are being diverted to Delhi. We regret the inconvenience caused due to this unforeseen disruption.”
India’s largest carrier Indigo issued an advisory saying: “#6ETravelAdvisory: Due to changing airspace conditions in the region, our flights to and from #Srinagar, #Jammu, #Amritsar, #Leh, #Chandigarh and #Dharamshala are impacted. We request you to check your flight status at https://bit.ly/31paVKQ before reaching the airport.“
Indigo said its flights to/fro Bikaner and Jodhpur, in the border state of Rajasthan, have also been impacted on account of flying restrictions.
In view of evolving airspace restrictions, we expect impact on flight schedules. It asked passengers to “check your flight status before leaving for the airport” and added: “We are actively monitoring the developments.”
Air India Express said in a statement: “In keeping with prevailing restructions, multiple flights on our network are impacted including cancellations of flights to and from Amrisar, Jammu, Srinagar and Hindon till mid-day May 7.”
Akasa Air said it had cancelled flights to Srinagar: “Due to the prevailing situation in the region, Srinagar airport has been closed for civil operations. As a result, our flights to and from Srinagar have been cancelled.”
