China struck the lone contrarian note to India’s Operation Sindoor strike at terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, calling it “regrettable”.
In the same breath, however, China said it “opposes all forms of terrorism” without taking Pakistan’s name.
In a caution, probably directed at Pakistan which has formally promised retaliation, the Chinese said exercised restraint and “refrain from taking actions that may further complicate the situation”.
The reaction from Beijing came hours after the military operation in the early hours of May 7 when Indian strikes targeted nine terror hotspots across the border in a non-escalatory exercise following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.
“China finds India’s military operation early this morning regrettable. We are concerned about the ongoing situation. India and Pakistan are and will always be each other’s neighbors,” the Chinese foreign ministry said in a short statement.
“They’re both China’s neighbors as well. China opposes all forms of terrorism. We urge both sides to act in the larger interest of peace and stability, remain calm, exercise restraint and refrain from taking actions that may further complicate the situation,” the statement said.
