Female boxers win historic double gold for India

Knockout performances by Hooda and Lamboria clinch world titles on the global stage.

India’s campaign at the World Boxing Championships 2025 in Liverpool ended on a historic note as Minakshi Hooda and Jaismine Lamboria secured gold medals in their respective categories.

The two boxers now join the ranks of six-time champion Mary Kom, two-time winner Nikhat Zareen, Sarita Devi, Jenny RL, Lekha KC, Lovlina Borgohain, Saweety Boora, and Nitu Ghanghas.

24-year-old Hooda captured the title in the women’s 48kg event on Sept.14, defeating Kazakhstan’s Paris 2024 bronze medallist Nazym Kyzaibay 4-1 in the final.

Her road to the summit included commanding victories over Mongolia’s Altantsetseg Lutsaikhan in the semifinals, England’s Alice Pumphrey in the quarterfinals, and China’s Wang Qiuping in the earlier round, all by unanimous decisions.

A day earlier, Jaismine Lamboria, also 24, overcame Poland’s top seed and Olympic medallist Julia Szeremeta in the 57kg final. She prevailed in a tense bout with a 4-1 split decision.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the two boxers on their achievements in two separate posts on X.

India concluded the World Boxing Championships 2025 with a total of four medals. Nupur Sheoran secured a silver medal after a hard-fought final against Poland’s Agata Kaczmarska in the +80 kg category. Meanwhile, Pooja Rani earned a bronze medal in the 80 kg division, following her semifinal bout against England’s Emily Asquith.
