The Consulate General of India in New York commemorated 200 years of Assam Tea with a special celebration at the Summer Fancy Food Show 2025.
The event at the India Pavilion in Jacob K. Javits Center was jointly inaugurated by Assam chief secretary Ravi Kota and Binaya Srikanta Pradhan, Consul General of India in New York.

“This year, we proudly commemorate 200 glorious years of Assam Tea—a journey that began along the banks of the Brahmaputra in 1823 and has since grown into a global symbol of strength, flavour, and heritage,” Kota said.
The India Pavilion showcased a wide range of Indian teas through leading exporters including Unilever, Tata, Goodricke, Luxmi, and the Indian Tea Association. Emerging brands such as Aromica, Woolah, Dorei, and Earth Tea also participated, reflecting Assam’s evolving tea landscape. 'The Pavilion is more than a showcase of India’s culinary excellence—it is a celebration of shared values, vibrant flavours, and the enduring bond between India and the United States," Kota added.
The newly created Assam Tea Lounge featured live brewing bars, sommelier-led tastings, tea pairings with cookies and chocolates, and storytelling through video interviews with tea growers. Visitors also experienced Assamese culture through music, dance, and crafts.
The event spotlighted India–U.S. collaborations across tea tourism, wellness, sustainability, and traceability. Key initiatives included the ‘Heritage to Wellness’ tea showcase, the India–USA Specialty Tea & Wellness Summit, and the signing of MoUs with U.S. universities, retailers, and innovation platforms.

The Government of Assam outlined a strategic roadmap focused on strengthening bilateral partnerships. Plans include promoting tea tourism—offering estate stays, golfing, and cultural experiences for American travellers—and enhancing cooperation in blockchain, AI, and global supply chain best practices.
In 2024–25, more than 100 million kilograms of Assam tea were exported to over 90 countries, generating nearly $285 million in revenue. “Major destinations include the United Kingdom, Russia, the UAE, Germany, Iraq, and China, underscoring Assam’s position as a trusted supplier,” said Kota.
Small growers now account for 40 percent of the state’s output, and the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre—India’s largest by volume—trades over 250 million kilograms annually via a digital, transparent, and regulated platform.
