Ro Khanna backs US-Iran deal, predicts lower costs

Khanna also criticized the war and argued that it was seemingly the same deal that Obama had signed over a decade ago.

Within hours of President Donald Trump announcing the successful finalization of deal with Iran and the end of U.S.' naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, Congressman Ro Khanna has urged his Democratic peers to back the progress made in the issue, however, he also described the attacks and successive standoff as a 'dumb war of choice'.

Trump, on June 14, announced that the United States and Iran had concluded talks and completed a deal which would reopen the Strait of Hormuz, ending what was effectively a two-way blockade by both Iran and the United States.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council also confirmed on June 14 that all its military operations would be ceased on all fronts, including Lebanon, which was a point of contention in earlier attempts at peace.

The announcement by Trump on Truth Social failed to divulge details about the complex navigation of Iran's nuclear policy, however, Trump noted, "With the opening of the Strait upon the signing of the Deal on Friday, for purposes of mine removal, oil will flow on both ends again for the Region, and the World!”

Reacting to the announcement, Khanna said, "The ceasefire agreement with Iran with the opening of the Strait of Hormuz is welcome news. Democrats should support it. I am glad it includes a provision for mutual respect of the US & Iran's sovereignty so we do not launch a dumb war of choice again."

Apart from the broad support to the deal, Khanna lambasted the Trump administration for not only starting the war but also accused it of seemingly finalizing the deal at the same level as Obama had years ago, allegedly making the war and the peace negotiation futile.

Khanna said, "The war was a costly lesson for the US. As expected, Trump failed to bring about regime change. The terms seem no better than what Obama secured under the JCPOA nearly a decade ago. America lost 14 precious service members and wasted billions of dollars on this foolish endeavor."

The Congressman from California, who recently dominated the Primaries in the run-up to the general elections, also expressed relief over the expected lowering of food and gas prices.

Khanna said, "But today, we can be relieved that gas and food costs will start coming down for Americans. And that no more American or civilian lives will be lost.

He added, "It also shows that when the Congress votes to end war --as we did last week -- it can be a wake up call for the President to listen to the anti-war sentiments of the American people."
