Unconventional AI founder Naveen Rao / Unconventional AI
Indian American founder of California-based AI company Unconventional AI, Naveen Rao, announced the launch of his company's first AI image generation model on June 25.
Named Un-0, the image generation model will showcase a new computing approach based on coupled oscillators instead of conventional digital processors, the company noted in a statement.
The company also claims its latest product demonstrates that AI systems can be built on an entirely different hardware architecture designed to dramatically improve energy efficiency.
Unlike traditional diffusion models that run on GPUs, Un-0 operates on a software simulation of the company's proposed oscillator-based hardware.
Announcing the launch of Un-0, Rao said on X, "Today we introduce Un-0 from Unconventional AI: the first large-scale generative model built on physics as a compute primitive."
Rao further said, "This represents a 'hello world' moment for physics-based models. We use the inherent time-varying behavior of physical systems to do compute for us. The result is a new way to build a computer that can be VASTLY more power efficient."

According to Unconventional AI, the model delivers image quality comparable to existing diffusion models while laying the groundwork for a new generation of AI hardware.
The company says its oscillator architecture processes information through the physical behavior of synchronized oscillators rather than binary transistor operations.
If successfully implemented in hardware, the approach could significantly reduce the power required for AI inference, addressing one of the industry's biggest challenges as demand for AI computing continues to grow.
While the technology currently exists only as a software simulation, the company plans to release chip designs and eventually build its own AI inference hardware based on the new architecture.
Rao holds a Ph.D. in neuroscience from Brown University and has founded and sold two AI startups, Nervana Systems, which was acquired by Intel, and MosaicML, acquired by Databricks.
