MI New York keep MLC title defense hopes alive

The defending champions overcame Marcus Stoinis' five-wicket haul to stay in the playoff race.

MI New York kept their Major League Cricket title defense alive with a 17-run win over the Seattle Orcas at Grand Prairie, Texas, on July 10, strengthening their playoff hopes.

Tajinder Singh starred with an unbeaten 66 off 27 balls, while Kieron Pollard added 54 as MI New York recovered from an early collapse to post 179/8. Romario Shepherd and Pollard then combined to take four wickets as the defending champions restricted Seattle to 162/6, despite Marcus Stoinis' five-wicket haul and Tim Seifert's unbeaten 88.

Asked to bat after losing the toss, MI New York endured a difficult start, losing Ryan Rickelton and Nicholas Pooran for six each inside the opening four overs. Monank Patel and Shakib Al Hasan briefly steadied the innings before both fell, leaving the side reeling at 51/4 inside nine overs.



Pollard and Tajinder rebuilt the innings with a vital 80-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Pollard struck four fours and four sixes in his 54 off 33 balls before falling in the 19th over.

Tajinder then took charge in the closing overs, smashing nine fours and three sixes in an unbeaten 66 off 27 deliveries. He scored 26 runs across the final two overs to lift MI New York to 179/8.

Stoinis was the standout bowler for Seattle, finishing with 5/46 from his four overs. Ottneil Baartman claimed 2/18, while Ali Sheikh picked up 1/14.

Chasing 180, Seattle's innings was anchored by Seifert, who made 88 off 61 balls with five fours and five sixes. After Shayan Jahangir was run out for seven by a direct hit from Tajinder, Seifert and Matthew Breetzke added 117 runs for the second wicket to keep the chase on track.

Breetzke scored 44 off 31 balls before Pollard dismissed him in the 16th over, sparking a collapse. Shimron Hetmyer, Stoinis and Ali Sheikh all fell in quick succession before Seifert was caught behind off Shepherd in the penultimate over.

With 22 needed from the final over and only the tail remaining, Seattle finished on 162/6, falling 17 runs short.

Shepherd returned figures of 2/13 in three overs, while Pollard claimed 2/9 in 1.5 overs to cap an all-round performance that kept MI New York's hopes of defending the MLC title alive.
