Indian garment exporters reel under US tariffs

October 2025 241 views 2:41

Garment exporters in the town of Tiruppur are reeling from US President Donald Trump's imposition of 50 percent tariffs on Indian goods. Dubbed India's "knitwear capital", the small industrial town produced $5 billion in garments last fiscal year, two-fifths going to the United States. At another factory, work hours have been cut and boxes of garments wait to be shipped.

Garment exporters in the town of Tiruppur are reeling under pressure after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a 50% tariff on Indian goods. Known as India’s “Knitwear Capital”, this small but powerful industrial hub produced $5 billion worth of garments in the last fiscal year, with two-fifths of the exports going to the United States. The new tariff has hit the textile sector hard — at one factory, work hours have been reduced, and boxes of garments lie waiting to be shipped, reflecting the growing uncertainty and financial strain among exporters.
