Indian American student Avi Patel was among 10 Yale College undergraduates honored with the university’s annual Y-Work Awards for Outstanding Undergraduate Student Employees, recognizing contributions made through on-campus jobs across the university.

Patel, a member of Yale College’s Class of 2026, received the recognition for his work as a student intern in Yale’s Office of Development and as a communications intern with the Department of Internal Medicine at Yale School of Medicine.

The awards, presented last week by the Yale College Dean’s Office and the Office of Undergraduate Financial Aid, recognize undergraduate employees whose work contributed to university departments and campus life. The ceremony took place at the Yale Schwarzman Center.

In remarks during the ceremony, Yale College Dean Pericles Lewis said the recipients stood out among numerous nominees for “their dedication and professionalism in the workplace as well as their initiative and innovation to go above and beyond the call of duty.”

Lewis also thanked supervisors for helping students gain experience beyond the classroom and develop long-term professional skills.

Patel’s supervisors included Gena Lai, senior director of complex gifts management in the Office of Development, and Serena Crawford, associate director of communications at Yale School of Medicine.

In a statement released by Yale, Crawford praised Patel’s reporting and writing work within the Department of Internal Medicine.

“Avi has done exceptional work interviewing and writing news stories about faculty, staff, and trainees — work that has strengthened the department’s reputation and boosted morale,” Crawford said.

She added that Patel “quickly earned the trust of colleagues across the department and emerged as one of the strongest writers at Yale School of Medicine.”

According to the statement, Patel’s stories appeared regularly in Yale News and Yale Today. Faculty members he profiled were also frequently contacted by outside reporters regarding their research.

Lai separately commended Patel’s work in the Office of Development.

“Avi Patel’s initiative and impact on our office have been truly extraordinary for an undergraduate employee,” Lai said.

“Although the work of CGM falls well outside his primary academic focus, Avi quickly learned new subject matter and proactively applied his skills to address complex operational challenges.”

According to his Yale School of Medicine profile, Patel works on stories covering research breakthroughs, faculty leadership, and innovations across the Department of Internal Medicine’s 10 academic sections.

The profile states that his work has appeared in Yale News, the Yale Today newsletter, and regional publications including the Hartford Courant.

Patel is majoring in the History of Science, Medicine, and Public Health at Yale College and is also a Global Health Scholar.
