Shanthanu Krishna receives Penn State grant for student-led orchard research
The grant will support a student-led project on orchard diagnostics.

Penn State has announced that Indian-origin academic Shanthanu Krishna has received a grant from the university's Institute for Sustainable Agricultural, Food, and Environmental Science (SAFES).
Krishna, an assistant professor of tree fruit in the College of Agricultural Sciences, is among five faculty members selected to receive $5000 grant funding for projects designed to enhance student learning through hands-on educational experiences. His project, titled "Student-led Orchard Diagnostics and Decision Support in Modern High-Density Tree-Fruit Systems," will give students practical experience in orchard diagnostics while helping develop resources for commercial fruit growers.

As part of the initiative, about 25 students will visit Ridgetop Orchards and Boyer Orchards in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, where they will collect and analyze soil and leaf tissue samples from 16 sites in commercial high-density orchards.
The students will then translate their findings into grower-facing nutrient and soil management resources, combining classroom learning with field-based research.
Krishna's areas of expertise include fruit crop physiology, apple and peach production, crop load management, plant growth regulators, and post-harvest physiology. He earned his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 2023 after completing a master's degree at the University of Guelph and bachelor's degrees from Dalhousie University and Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.
