Joia Mukherjee, an associate professor of medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and associate professor at Harvard Medical School, has been announced as the speaker for the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons ceremony on May 20, 2026, in New York.
Mukherjee was raised in Huntington, New York, as the daughter of an Indian father and an American mother.
The ceremony will take place at 3 p.m. at The Armory, located at 216 Fort Washington Ave. It will recognize graduates earning Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in biomedical sciences at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Mukherjee serves as an associate professor in the Division of Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and as an associate professor of global health and social medicine at Harvard Medical School. She also directs the Master of Medical Sciences in Global Health Delivery program and the Program in Global Medical Education and Social Change.
Her work focuses on infectious disease, global health delivery and human rights in health care. She teaches health professionals and students from around the world and has helped establish residency and fellowship training programs for physicians in Rwanda and Haiti, as well as global health training programs for U.S. medical trainees.
Mukherjee graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School and completed training in infectious disease, internal medicine and pediatrics at Massachusetts General Hospital. She also holds a Master of Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health.
Since 2000, she has served as chief medical officer of Partners In Health, a nonprofit focused on reducing global health disparities. In that role, she provides guidance on clinical programs in countries including Haiti, Rwanda, Malawi, Lesotho, Peru, Mexico, Russia, Sierra Leone and Liberia. She has also worked as a consultant for the World Health Organization and ministries of health on issues including HIV, tuberculosis and health system development.
Mukherjee serves on the board of Village Health Works in Burundi, Muso in Mali and the Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti. She also advises grassroots organizations working to expand access to health care in underserved communities.
The Vagelos College ceremony is one of several events held to mark milestones in students’ medical education, including the White Coat Ceremony, Match Day and commencement.
