Indian-origin professor Sanjay Shete wins MD Anderson faculty award

Indian-origin professor Sanjay Shete has been recognized by the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center with a Faculty Achievement Award in cancer prevention.

Shete, professor of Biostatistics, received the award along with five others.

The Faculty Achievement Awards recognize faculty for exemplary work at UT MD Anderson across a variety of disciplines. Recipients have made significant, original contributions that greatly advance the understanding and treatment of cancer while enhancing the institution’s global reputation.

Shete earned a Master of Philosophy in statistics from Shivaji University, Kolhapur.

Shete, Ph.D., is a genetic epidemiologist with interests in developing statistical methods for genetic data. The determinants of many human disease traits include genetic components.

His research focuses on the development and implementation of statistical methods for analyzing family and pedigree data to identify genes that cause disease.

He is the principal investigator for a genomewide association study of head and neck cancer. He is also the principal investigator, with Dr. Chang, for a NIDA-funded R25 training grant on innovative multidisciplinary education: the statistical genetics of addiction.

One clear focus of his current research is developing methods for gene-gene and gene-environment interactions and applying them to cancer data from molecular epidemiologic studies. He has developed methods to identify imprinted genes.

Statistical methods applied to genetic and molecular data play a key role in uncovering the often-complex relationship between important traits in humans and their genetic basis.
