His efforts have attracted nearly $45 million in research funding from the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the U.S. Department of Energy.

With over 185 peer-reviewed papers and eight patents, Bajwa has significantly advanced wood science and industrial crop applications. He also serves as editor-in-chief of 'Industrial Crops and Products' and has guided numerous graduate, undergraduate, and postdoctoral scholars—many now established leaders in academia and industry.

Before joining Montana State University, he served at North Dakota State University, where he developed expertise in bioproducts engineering. He holds a Ph.D. in agricultural and biological engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

This distinction adds to his list of accolades, including induction as a fellow of the International Academy of Wood Science in 2023 and MSU’s Provost’s Award for Undergraduate Research/Creative Mentoring. Colleagues commend his dedication to collaborative, cross-disciplinary innovation uniting engineering and natural resources.

The award honors professionals who demonstrate exceptional influence and long-term achievement in the field, reflecting the legacy of A.E. (Tommy) Thompson, a pioneer in industrial crop development. Candidates are evaluated for their research excellence, leadership, and impact within the AAIC, which promotes non-food and non-feed crop utilization.

The AAIC will formally confer the award during its annual conference, reaffirming Montana State University’s growing role in advancing global sustainability research.
