Her work has been published in more than 100 magazines and anthologies, including The Atlantic, The New Yorker, The Best American Short Stories and O. Henry Prize Stories. Her writings have been translated into 30 languages, including Dutch, Hebrew, Bengali, Hungarian, Turkish, Hindi and Japanese.

Her books have been adapted into films, plays, dance dramas and operas. She has received several prestigious awards, including the American Book Award, the PEN Josephine Miles Award, the Premio Scanno and the Light of India Award.
