Brown University’s Division of Research has named Indian-origin researcher Anita Shukla as one of its recipients of the 2026 internal research funding awards, supporting projects across disciplines and advancing research at the university.

Shukla, the Elaine I. Savage professor of engineering, received a Richard B. Salomon Faculty Research Award for her project focused on developing new treatments for fungal infections.

Shukla’s project, “Nanoengineered Platforms for Next-Generation Antifungal Therapeutics,” addresses infections caused by Candida albicans, a major fungal pathogen associated with high mortality, limited treatment options and increasing resistance to existing antifungal drugs.

Rather than focusing solely on fungal growth, the research targets mechanisms that enable the fungus to cause disease, including its transition to invasive hyphal forms and production of candidalysin, a peptide toxin. The project proposes using liposomal nanoparticles to target these virulence mechanisms.

The two-phase research effort aims to establish a foundation for developing virulence-targeted antimicrobial strategies and generate preliminary data for future federal center-level funding.

Shukla is the principal investigator of the project, with Richard Bennett, Charles A. and Helen B. Stuart Professor of molecular microbiology and immunology, serving as co-principal investigator.

Shukla joined Brown in 2013 after completing a National Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellowship at Rice University. She earned her doctorate in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2011 and has received honors including a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers and an NSF CAREER Award.

The Salomon Faculty Research Awards support research projects of exceptional merit with grants of up to $15,000 for one year, or up to $30,000 for projects in the arts, humanities and humanistic social sciences. This year’s awards span fields including arts and humanities, social sciences, physical sciences, public health, and biological and life sciences.
