Two Telangana students killed in UK car crash

Chaitanya Tarre, 23, died at the scene, while Rishi Teja Rapolu, 21, succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

Two Indian-origin students were killed and five others sustained serious injuries in a car collision in Essex, UK, on Sept. 1.

The accident occurred early Sept. 1 morning when two vehicles collided on the A130 at the Rayleigh Spur roundabout in south-east England. Chaitanya Tarre, 23, died at the scene, while Rishi Teja Rapolu, 21, succumbed to his injuries in hospital soon after.

The victims, along with their peers from the Telugu community, were reportedly returning from a Ganesh Visarjan (immersion) celebration when the crash occurred.

“Specialist officers are supporting their families. Five other people were taken to hospital with serious injuries,” Essex Police said in a statement on Sept. 2.

The drivers of the two vehicles, men aged 23 and 24 from Barking in east London, were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. They have since been released on bail until Nov. 20. Police have appealed for information, including CCTV or dash cam footage, to aid the investigation.

The National Indian Students and Alumni Union (NISAU) UK expressed its condolences, describing the incident as a “heartbreaking tragedy.”

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic road accident in Essex, UK, involving nine students from the Telugu community. The accident has claimed the precious lives of two young students, Chaitanya Tarre and Rishi Teja Rapolu,” NISAU said in a statement. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to their families and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

The organisation added that several other students remain in hospital and under urgent medical care. “We are keeping them and their families in our thoughts and prayers, and we hope for their swift and full recovery,” it said.
