U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal has accused the Trump administration of manufacturing a “culture war,” centered on transgender rights to divert public attention from broader economic and foreign policy decisions.

The Washington Democrat argued that transgender individuals — who make up less than 1% of the U.S. population — are being unfairly targeted as a political distraction as part of a deliberate strategy by the Trump administration.

“They are not why your health care premiums are climbing. They are not why ICE agents are showing up in our neighborhoods,” Jayapal wrote on X. “They are not the reason billionaires keep getting richer while working families fall further behind.”

According to Jayapal, that “manufactured outrage” is a deliberate strategy aimed at shifting public discourse away from the “real story.”

“While we're arguing about a culture war Trump invented, his administration is pouring millions of dollars into ICE's mass detention and deportation machine,” she said.

Jayapal said President Donald Trump launched an “illegal war” in Iran without a shred of congressional approval. “And he is taking health care away from millions of Americans so he can hand more money to billionaires and corporations,” she said.

Jayapal said there is a calculated effort by the administration to divide voters by targeting vulnerable populations.

“Manufacture a distraction, target the most vulnerable, and hope no one notices what's happening to everyone else,” Jayapal said.

“We notice. And we're not falling for it,” she said.
