Indian American civil engineer Priya Jain has been sworn in as the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s 21st commissioner on March 30.

The ceremony took place days after her March 23 confirmation by the New Jersey State Senate following her nomination by Gov. Mikie Sherrill earlier this year.

Since her appointment, Jain has been serving as acting commissioner and will continue overseeing the state’s transportation network.

In addition to leading NJDOT, her role includes serving as chair of New Jersey Transit, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, and the South Jersey Transportation Authority.

Jain holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a master’s degree in physics from Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani, as well as a master’s degree in environmental engineering from the University at Buffalo.

She is also a member of the board of directors of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, the Northeast Association of State Transportation Officials, and The Eastern Transportation Coalition.

In addition to her professional roles, Jain serves as an advisory board member for civil engineering at the City College of New York.
