Nehru Centre in London celebrates India’s handloom heritage

From Bihar's timeless weaves and Rajasthan's colorful textiles to West Bengal's poetic Jamdani, every drape reflects India's heritage, resilience and the creativity of its artisans. In celebration of these ancient handloom traditions, the Nehru Centre in London hosted a vibrant showcase to mark the 12th National Handloom Day.
Organized in collaboration with Inspiring Indian Women, the event held on Aug. 7 brought together diplomats, culture enthusiasts and members of the diaspora to honor the artisans whose craftsmanship keeps these timeless legacies alive.
The Nehru Centre is the cultural wing of the High Commission of India run under the aegis of the ICCR.
The event brought together an extraordinary array of regional masterpieces, including Assam's rich weaving traditions, Goa's unique textile heritage, Punjab's vibrant embroidery and Maharashtra's iconic Paithanis, Odisha's intricate ikat patterns, Andhra Pradesh's rich textures, Karnataka's historical looms and Kerala's elegant drapes.

The gathering reflected on how handlooms serve as more than artistic expressions, as they remain a powerful force for rural empowerment, women-led development and the vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat.

“Honoring the Hands that Weave Bharat! Between the warp and the weft lies a story of patience, skill and dedication. Every thread begins in the hands of an artisan. Every weave carries a story. Every fabric preserves a legacy. This 12th National Handloom Day, we honor the skilled weavers whose craftsmanship continues to keep India's rich textile traditions alive — one shuttle, one motif and one masterpiece at a time,” the High Commission of India in London wrote on X to mark the day.
