Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi hit out at U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest executive order blocking mail-in ballots on April 28 and appealed for a public outcry against the move.

Late last month, Trump signed an executive order aimed at tightening election procedures, focusing on voter rolls and mail-in ballots, which he said would help “secure elections in the future.”

Titled “Ensuring Citizenship Verification and Integrity in Federal Elections,” the order focuses on strengthening voter eligibility checks, particularly citizenship, for federal elections and imposing new rules on how the United States Postal Service handles mail-in and absentee ballots.

It builds on earlier Trump administration efforts to address concerns about election integrity, such as non-citizen voting and vulnerabilities in mail voting.

Responding to this order, Krishnamoorthi said, “Your mail-in ballot is under attack. A new White House executive order effectively shuts down mail-in ballots for millions of people.”

Now shrouded in legal challenges, the order has been labeled by Democrats as an attempt by Trump to tip the election scales.

Krishnamoorthi said, “I'm standing with a coalition of Democrats and helping to lead the charge on the House Oversight Committee to make sure that everybody knows what's happening.”

Appealing for support, he continued, “I'd like you to raise your voice against any kind of changes to the way that the United States Postal Service handles mail-in balloting, because that is where Trump is trying to attack mail-in ballots.”

Congressman Krishnamoorthi has been a long-standing critic of Trump’s efforts to modify election rules. In February this year, he introduced the Free Elections Act, a legislative response to potential executive overreach. It seeks to prohibit the president from using emergency powers or deploying federal agents to interfere in elections. It also strengthens legal protections against abusing the Insurrection Act or National Emergencies Act for election administration.
