Virginia State Senator Kannan Srinivasan has been elected Treasurer of the Virginia Senate Democratic Caucus, taking on a leadership role within the party’s governing body.

“I am honored to be elected Treasurer of the Virginia Senate Democratic Caucus,” Srinivasan said in a post on social media.

In a longer message, he said he was “grateful for the trust of my colleagues” and looked forward to working with them to keep the caucus “strong, organized, and focused on delivering affordability, opportunity, and practical results for families across the Commonwealth.”

The Virginia Senate Democratic Caucus is composed of Democratic members of the state Senate and coordinates legislative priorities, internal strategy, and leadership elections.

The caucus elects its leadership team, including the treasurer, which helps manage internal operations and party organization within the chamber.

Democrats currently hold a narrow majority in the 40-member Senate, making caucus coordination central to advancing legislation.

The position was previously held by Lt. Gov. Ghazala Hashmi, who served as caucus treasurer in 2023.

Srinivasan represents District 32 in Eastern Loudoun and assumed office in the Virginia Senate in January 2025 after winning a special election. He previously served in the Virginia House of Delegates for District 26.

Born in Chennai, India, Srinivasan is a finance professional and former chair of the Virginia Medicaid Board. His legislative work has included issues related to healthcare access, consumer protection, and the opioid crisis.
