An Indian-origin man in the United Kingdom has been convicted of attempted murder after a violent attack in east London left a woman and two children seriously injured.
Kulvinder Ram, 49, was found guilty following a four-week trial at London’s Old Bailey court over the Oct. 25, 2024 attack in Dagenham. He was convicted of attempted murder in relation to a woman and a child and of causing grievous bodily harm to a second child.

The three victims suffered severe injuries requiring surgery. One victim remained in critical condition for several days, with doctors initially fearing they would not survive.
Ram was detained at the scene by Special Police Sergeant Seff Serroukh, an off-duty officer with London’s Metropolitan Police Special Constabulary, who encountered the victims while returning home from work.
Serroukh said he initially mistook the scene for a Halloween prank before realizing the seriousness of the attack.
“I quickly ran towards them and was immediately struck by the extent of their injuries and the amount of blood,” Serroukh said in a statement released by the Metropolitan Police.
“When I became aware children were involved, I knew I had to act quickly. I had no safety equipment, no colleagues to assist, but as a father and a police officer it was just a natural instinct to respond without hesitation, even without knowing the risk,” he added.
According to Serroukh, Ram emerged from the property as he approached and he managed to restrain him while calling emergency services.
“I managed to keep him detained until colleagues arrived to take over,” he said.
Detective Constable Lewis Whitlock, who led the investigation, said investigators were convinced Ram intended to kill the victims.
“Our investigation left us with no doubt that Ram intended to kill those he targeted, and we are pleased the jury has reached the same verdict based on the evidence we presented at court,” Whitlock said.
He also praised Serroukh’s intervention, saying the officer “ran towards danger without any hesitation for his own personal safety.”
“Without him, I have no doubt that Ram would have gone on to inflict further and most likely fatal injuries,” Whitlock added.
Police also commended a member of the public who entered the house during the attack and attempted to stop one victim’s bleeding, saying the intervention played a major role in saving the victim’s life.
During the trial, the court heard Ram had been suffering from then-undiagnosed schizophrenia at the time of the attack, though jurors determined he understood his actions. Prosecutors said he had become increasingly paranoid in the days leading up to the incident and believed he was being watched through cameras.
The court also heard Ram’s behavior had become increasingly erratic before the attack, including allegedly threatening to kill one of the victims two weeks earlier.
Ram was arrested after the attack and remained in custody throughout the trial. He will be sentenced at a later date.
